Senior Library Clerk - Circulation Services

About the role

Under the direction of an immediate supervisor, the Senior Library Clerk oversees the circulation of library materials and the daily operations of a designated service area. The role includes supervising staff, training new team members, and ensuring smooth delivery of library services to patrons.

Key responsibilities

• Process loans, returns, renewals, holds and issue borrowing cards according to schedule.
• Organise daily workflow, distribute tasks, verify staff output and provide on‑the‑job training.
• Resolve patron inquiries and service problems at the assigned location.
• Handle payments, issue receipts and manage overdue notices, recalls and interlibrary loan requests.
• Scan, barcode, affix security strips and prepare library materials for circulation.
• Maintain equipment, supplies and office tools used in the service area.
• Conduct inventory, shelf‑reading, collection‑shifting and reserve material processing.
• Provide basic reference assistance and demonstrate catalogue use.
• Compile service statistics and contribute to procedural improvements.

Required profile

• Experience in library circulation or a similar customer‑service environment.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to supervise and train staff.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in handling materials and financial transactions.
• Good communication skills and ability to explain library policies to users.
• Commitment to health‑ and safety regulations.

Required skills

• Proficiency with library circulation software and electronic catalogues.
• Experience using office equipment such as computers, scanners, photocopiers and 3D printers.
• Basic reference searching (title, author, subject, keyword).
