Senior Epidemiologist – Wildfire Smoke Research

About the role

The Senior Epidemiologist will lead statistical and technical aspects of multiple cutting‑edge research projects examining the health impacts of wildfire smoke across British Columbia and Canada. Reporting to Dr. Sarah Henderson, the role combines advanced epidemiologic analysis with mentorship of research staff and graduate trainees.

Key responsibilities

• Design and conduct epidemiologic studies on short‑term and long‑term health outcomes of wildfire smoke exposure, including respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and prenatal effects.
• Manage data access requests, develop reproducible pipelines for data cleaning, preparation, and integration.
• Perform advanced statistical analyses and generate knowledge‑translation materials such as presentations, reports, and peer‑reviewed journal articles.
• Supervise and coordinate work of research staff, graduate trainees, and collaborators at partner institutions (SFU, UBC, BCCDC, Health Canada, uOttawa, etc.).
• Collaborate with principal investigators and external agencies to ensure scientific rigor and relevance.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading epidemiologic research projects related to environmental health.
• Strong background in quantitative research methods and statistical analysis.
• Ability to supervise and mentor research personnel and trainees.
• Excellent communication skills for preparing scientific manuscripts and stakeholder reports.
