Senior Counsel – Global Surety (Canada)

About the role

Liberty Mutual Canada is seeking a senior legal leader to direct the Global Surety legal function across Canada. The Senior Counsel will shape the legal framework for the surety portfolio, influence underwriting strategy, and manage enterprise‑level legal risk.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute legal strategy for Canadian surety business.
• Own the end‑to‑end legal framework supporting contract and commercial surety activities.
• Influence underwriting risk appetite and governance standards.
• Act as final decision authority on complex, high‑exposure matters within delegated authority.
• Partner with Global Surety Legal to ensure alignment with international practices.
• Provide proactive legal guidance to underwriting and executive leadership.

Required profile

• Extensive experience as a legal counsel in insurance, surety, or related financial services.
• Proven ability to lead enterprise‑level legal risk management.
• Strong collaboration skills with underwriting and senior executives.
• Experience working in a multi‑jurisdictional Canadian environment.
• Excellent communication and decision‑making abilities.
