Senior Backend Java Engineer

About the role

Mastercard’s Ethoca division is seeking a Senior Backend Java Engineer to design and deliver secure, scalable software that powers collaboration across the global payments ecosystem. You will own end‑to‑end development of critical services, driving initiatives from concept to production while ensuring high reliability and operational excellence.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain high‑quality Java backend services that meet Mastercard security and scalability standards.
• Independently lead technical initiatives, manage dependencies, and deliver measurable business outcomes.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, operations, security, and compliance teams to translate business needs into robust technical solutions.
• Contribute to architecture decisions for distributed systems, APIs, and platform integrations.
• Own the full service lifecycle, including monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues using logs, metrics, traces, and debugging tools.
• Participate in on‑call rotations, incident reviews, and operational readiness activities.
