School Crossing Guard – Permanent Part‑Time

About the role

Join the City of Hamilton’s team as a School Crossing Guard, helping ensure the safety of elementary school children as they travel to and from school across busy roadways. This permanent, part‑time position supports the city’s vision of being the best place to raise a child and age successfully.

Key responsibilities

• Obey all traffic safety regulations and assist pedestrians, especially school children, in safely crossing major roadways at designated locations.
• Report and document any issues such as weather conditions, traffic incidents, or concerns involving children or motorists to the supervisor.
• Assist in training new crossing guards as required.
• Perform other duties directly related to the responsibilities of the position, including traveling to various work locations within Hamilton.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a role involving traffic safety or pedestrian assistance.
• Working knowledge of traffic safety regulations.
• Ability to maintain high concentration with good visual and hearing acuity to recognize traffic at a safe distance.
• Physical ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods and carry a hand‑held stop sign (approximately 5 lb).
• Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
• Willingness to obtain a Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening) and medical clearance at own expense before starting work.
