Researcher – Computer Vision & Human-Centered AI

About the role

Huawei Canada’s Human‑Machine Interaction Lab is seeking a researcher to advance computer‑vision capabilities that enable intuitive human‑AI collaboration across smartphones, wearables and emerging devices. The role focuses on 2D/3D scene understanding, real‑time reconstruction and integration of vision models with large language models.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct advanced research in computer vision, including object detection, segmentation, 3D vision and multi‑camera calibration.
• Develop and optimise vision‑centric perception pipelines and sensor‑fusion techniques for real‑time inference on edge hardware.
• Integrate vision foundation models and vision‑language models with LLMs to create smart, multimodal AI workflows.
• Establish evaluation frameworks and metrics that measure both algorithmic performance and human‑centric outcomes.
• Collaborate with engineering, hardware and design teams to translate research into product‑ready prototypes.

Required profile

• Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics or AI with a focus on computer vision.
• 3+ years of applied R&D experience in computer vision for consumer electronics, robotics or AR/VR, with contributions to shipped products.
• Demonstrated ability to turn academic research into practical product opportunities.

Required skills

• Strong programming in C/C++ and Python.
• Expertise in computer‑vision techniques: object detection, image segmentation, 3D vision, multi‑camera calibration.
• Proficiency with deep‑learning frameworks and edge deployment tools for hardware acceleration.
• Experience with vision‑language models, multimodal fusion and integration with large language models.
• Real‑time video processing and embedded hardware prototyping.
