Research Assistant/Technician 2 – Animal Care Facility

About the role

The University of British Columbia is seeking a Research Assistant/Technician 2 to support the animal‑based research community at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. The role involves high‑level animal care, facility maintenance, and collaboration with clinical veterinarians and laboratory staff.

Key responsibilities

• Provide daily care and husbandry for small laboratory animals.
• Maintain cleanliness of the animal care facility and ensure adequate supplies of food and bedding.
• Operate animal anesthesia machines, diagnostic laboratory equipment, specialized surgical tools, and digital environmental monitoring systems.
• Follow CCAC and UBC Animal Care Committee protocols to prevent disease introduction and research variability.
• Work closely with Registered Veterinary Technologists, clinical veterinarians, and researchers in a regulated environment.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in laboratory animal husbandry and care.
• Ability to adhere strictly to standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines.
• Willingness to maintain required certifications, courses, and testing.
• Comfort working with potentially hazardous materials and using personal protective equipment.

Required skills

• Animal husbandry techniques for small laboratory species.
• Operation of animal anesthesia machines.
• Use of diagnostic laboratory and specialized surgical equipment.
