Refrigeration Journeyman (313A)

About the role

Black & McDonald is seeking an experienced Refrigeration Journeyman (313A) to service industrial and recreational refrigeration systems across Southwest Ontario. The role involves travel to sites in Hamilton, London and surrounding areas, providing maintenance, repairs and installations while delivering excellent customer service.

Key responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting and repairs on industrial and recreational refrigeration systems.
• Service ammonia, CO₂, glycol and synthetic refrigerant‑based equipment, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, cooling towers and heat exchangers.
• Diagnose and repair control systems, electrical components, sensors, valves and safety devices.
• Conduct refrigerant leak detection, recovery, charging and evacuation in compliance with regulations.
• Support arena refrigeration, ice‑making equipment and related mechanical systems.
• Maintain accurate service records, inspection reports and O&M manuals using electronic work‑order systems.

Required profile

• Skilled Trades Ontario Certificate of Qualification for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (313A) or equivalent.
• 3‑5 years of experience servicing industrial or recreational refrigeration systems, with strong knowledge of ammonia and CO₂ systems.
• Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence and ability to travel throughout Southwest Ontario.
• Ability to work on‑call rotations and respond to emergency service calls.

Required skills

• Ammonia and CO₂ refrigeration system expertise.
• PLC‑based control and Building Automation Systems (BAS) knowledge.
• Experience with CMMS (e.g., DSI) and mobile work‑order platforms.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
