Plant Operator – Direct Air Capture Facility

About the role

We are looking for a hands‑on Plant Operator to join Deep Sky’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) facility in Innisfail, Alberta. Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will support the startup and continuous operation of a cutting‑edge carbon‑removal plant, working on a rotating 7‑on/7‑off day and night shift schedule in an industrial environment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate DAC process units, sorbent regeneration systems, blowers, heat exchangers, compressors, pumps and related balance‑of‑plant equipment.
• Support commissioning and startup activities, including pre‑startup checks, functional testing and system flushes.
• Monitor process parameters (flow, temperature, pressure, gas composition) and execute control actions to maintain stability.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical and process issues; perform corrective actions or coordinate maintenance teams.
• Complete daily operational and safety checklists, rounds and logs, escalating abnormal conditions promptly.
• Perform routine mechanical maintenance, equipment adjustments and minor repairs.
• Assess equipment performance, track KPIs and report degradation or optimisation opportunities.
• Follow SOPs, lockout/tagout, permit‑to‑work and all safety protocols.
• Participate in performance testing, data collection and root‑cause investigations.
• Support continuous‑improvement initiatives and mentor junior operators.

Required profile

• 4th Class Power Engineering certification (required).
• 5–10 years of commissioning, startup and operating experience in industrial process plants, preferably with gas handling, thermal regeneration, chemical processing or air‑separation equipment.
• Strong troubleshooting ability and mechanical aptitude.
• Comfortable working outdoors, at heights and performing physical tasks.
• Willingness to work rotating shift schedules.

Required skills

• Power Engineering (4th Class) certification.
• Hands‑on experience with pumps, compressors, blowers, heat exchangers, valves, instrumentation and basic electrical controls.
• Process data interpretation and KPI tracking.
• Mechanical maintenance and minor repair skills.
