About the role
The Detroit Justice Center is seeking a full‑time Paralegal to join its Legal Services and Advocacy Practice. This hybrid position combines remote work with on‑site presence in Detroit and serves as the first point of contact for clients facing justice‑related barriers.
Key responsibilities
- Interview prospective clients to determine legal issues, goals, and timelines.
- Create, organize, and maintain case files, client records, evidence, and contacts.
- Manage a case calendar tracking deadlines, court dates, meetings, and filings.
- Draft basic motions, briefs, and pleadings under attorney supervision; proofread and format documents.
- Prepare and send engagement and closing letters; keep clients updated.
- Conduct legal research, assist with discovery, and support litigation tasks.
- Perform administrative duties such as report preparation, mail handling, and office supply management.
- Liaise with courts and government agencies to file documents and obtain necessary records.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., political science, legal administration, criminal justice) or a Paralegal certificate.
- At least two years of experience as a paralegal or legal support staff; nonprofit or public‑interest experience is a plus.
- Strong ability to build rapport with diverse, justice‑impacted clients.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
