Palliative Care Physician – Port Alberni, BC

About the role

The Palliative Care Physician Group within Island Health is seeking a part‑time or full‑time permanent palliative‑care physician to serve the Port Alberni community. The role involves delivering comprehensive palliative‑care services across hospital, hospice, outpatient and home‑visit settings on Vancouver Island.

Key responsibilities

• Provide palliative‑care consults and follow‑ups at West Coast General Hospital and the 4‑bed Ty Watson House hospice.
• Conduct outpatient and home‑visit consults throughout Port Alberni and occasional outreach to Tofino/Ucluelet (driver’s licence and vehicle required).
• Participate in the rural & remote on‑call schedule for palliative‑care emergencies.
• Teach and supervise medical learners, requiring eligibility for a faculty appointment with the University of British Columbia.

Required profile

• Medical licence to practice as a physician in British Columbia.
• Qualified in palliative‑care medicine.
• Eligibility for a UBC faculty appointment.
• Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
• Willingness to work in a rural, on‑call environment.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and management of palliative‑care patients.
• Home‑visit care delivery.
• On‑call emergency response.
• Teaching and supervision of trainees.

What we offer

• Recruitment incentive up to $10,000 (Rural Subsidiary Agreement).
• Fee premium of 7.98% and an annual flat fee of $12,110.22.
• Rural CME funding starting at $2,200 per year, increasing to $4,400.
• Relocation assistance up to $15,000.
• Retention premium and flat fee.
