Mechanical Design Engineer – Railcar Projects

About the role

SYSTRA Canada is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to develop and modify mechanical solutions for refurbished passenger railcars. You will translate customer and regulatory requirements into reliable, manufacturable designs while supporting manufacturing and on‑site installation.

Key responsibilities

• Design and modify mechanical structures, equipment, and interior fittings for rolling stock.
• Perform layout studies, create 3D models, and produce manufacturing, assembly, and installation drawings.
• Define technical requirements, select materials and components, and ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable standards.
• Carry out calculations, design reviews, testing, and technical validation with suppliers and customers.
• Provide support during manufacturing, workshop activities, and on‑site installation, helping resolve technical and reliability issues.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including bills of materials, assembly manuals, and installation instructions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Approximately 2 years of experience in a similar mechanical design role.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in both French and English.

Required skills

• Proficiency with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Inventor or CATIA.
• Competence in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of rail vehicle standards (FRA, APTA, AAR, SAE, ASME, CSA, Transport Canada) is an asset.
