Marine Crane Operator – Derrick Barge

About the role

The Marine Crane Operator will run a 220‑tonne lattice boom crane mounted on a derrick barge for a marine demolition project. The role focuses on safe crane operation, rigging, and coordination with the barge foreman, vessel captains, and other skilled crew to complete demolition work on schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Operate a 220‑tonne crane on a derrick barge in line with lift plans, manufacturer guidelines and regulations.
• Perform rigging tasks to lift, move and load demolition arisings from marine terminal and dock structures.
• Extract concrete, steel, sheet and timber piles using a vibratory hammer.
• Cut concrete pile caps up to 54 inches wide with hydraulic shear cutters.
• Set up, break down, remove and reinstate the crane and its attachments as required.
• Prepare lift plans by calculating crane capacities and load weights.
• Conduct daily pre‑operational inspections, record defects and carry out routine maintenance.
• Coordinate lifting and demolition activities with the barge foreman, vessel captains, riggers and signalers, maintaining clear communication.

Required profile

• Proven experience operating hydraulic or mechanical friction cranes of 300 tonnes or less.
• Prior experience with crane operations from floating platforms or derrick barges.
• Valid BC crane operator certification (Mobile Crane Operator / Unlimited Tonnage) in good standing.
• Rigging and signaling qualifications appropriate to the lifting tasks.
• Ability to meet project, vessel and site medical, fitness‑for‑duty and drug/alcohol clearance requirements.
