Litigation Counsel

About the role

Disability Rights California is seeking an experienced Litigation Counsel to lead and support legal actions that protect the rights of people with disabilities. The role involves managing complex civil litigation, advising on policy, and collaborating with a diverse team of advocates.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage all phases of civil litigation, from investigation through trial and appeal.
• Draft and review pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and settlement agreements.
• Provide legal advice to staff, partners, and external stakeholders on disability‑rights issues.
• Develop and implement litigation strategies that align with the organization’s mission.
• Represent the organization in court, administrative hearings, and mediation sessions.
• Mentor junior attorneys and support staff in legal research and case preparation.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active California bar membership.
• Significant experience (typically 5+ years) in civil litigation, preferably with a focus on disability rights or public interest law.
• Demonstrated ability to handle complex, high‑stakes cases and manage multiple matters simultaneously.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
