Legal Counsel

About the role

IBC is the national industry association representing the majority of Canada’s home, car and business insurance companies. The Legal Counsel will join a team of five lawyers, a librarian and an underwriting advisor, reporting to the Vice‑President, Legal & General Counsel, and will provide legal advice to internal client groups across IBC’s regional offices.

Key responsibilities

• Review, draft and negotiate a variety of contracts such as NDAs, service, consulting and licensing agreements.
• Provide legal support on compliance, business operations and insurance law matters.
• Attend committee meetings and monitor discussions for compliance with federal competition law.
• Assist the Underwriting Advisor in coordinating member‑led groups that develop advisory policy wordings and address insurance coverage issues.
• Conduct legal research and produce summary bulletins on legislative and judicial developments affecting IBC members.

Required profile

• Member in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial Bar.
• 3‑5 years of experience in a law firm or in‑house legal department.
• Strong knowledge of property & casualty insurance, competition law and contract law.
• Proven ability to draft and negotiate complex agreements.
• Excellent analytical, writing and presentation skills with a business‑focused approach.
