Legal Counsel

About the role

The Legal Counsel will oversee all legal matters related to BYD’s operations in Canada, acting as a key advisor to senior management and business teams. The role ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations while protecting the company’s commercial interests as BYD expands in the Canadian automotive market.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and advise on complex commercial agreements, including automotive finance, dealer, distributor, fleet sales, supply, procurement, after‑sales service and operational contracts.
• Provide day‑to‑day legal advice to business units, assess and manage legal risks, and develop risk‑mitigation strategies.
• Support corporate compliance programs, monitor regulatory changes affecting the automotive industry, and deliver compliance training and risk‑awareness initiatives.
• Manage and coordinate disputes, claims, litigation and arbitration, liaise with external counsel and oversee outside legal service providers.
• Partner with Sales, Finance, Procurement, Network Development, HR and Operations to support market expansion, dealer network development and financial services initiatives.
