Legal Counsel – Commercial Contracts

About the role

Targray is seeking a commercially‑minded Legal Counsel focused on commercial contracts to join its legal team at the Montreal head office. The role is hands‑on and business‑facing, supporting trading and renewable energy transactions across the company’s renewables, energy transition, and commodity businesses.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and improve a wide range of commercial agreements, including purchase, sale, supply, offtake, trading, logistics and services contracts.
• Collaborate directly with traders and business teams to translate commercial ideas into clear, practical contracts.
• Develop new contract templates, frameworks, playbooks and clauses for emerging markets.
• Support transactions involving renewable fuels, environmental commodities, biofuels, feedstocks and other energy‑transition products.
• Provide practical legal and commercial risk advice in a fast‑paced environment.
• Work with legal, finance, risk, operations and senior leadership on contract strategy and execution.

Required profile

• Law degree and active membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial law society.
• At least 5 years of legal experience, with substantial commercial contract drafting and negotiation exposure.
• Strong judgment and ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives.
• Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, business‑oriented environment.
• Excellent written English skills for dealing with international counterparties.
• Interest in sustainability, renewable energy, commodities or emerging markets.

Required skills

• Advanced contract drafting and negotiation skills.
• Knowledge of commercial agreements such as supply, distribution, procurement, services, logistics and technology contracts.
