Labourer / Operator – Public Works (Permanent)

About the role

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is hiring Labourer / Operator staff for its Public Works Division. This permanent, full‑time position involves a mix of general labour, heavy‑equipment operation, and site maintenance to support municipal infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Perform general labour tasks such as forms, asphalt, concrete, pipe laying, traffic control, trenching, and site clean‑up.
• Operate heavy equipment safely, including backhoes, graders, pay loaders, tandem trucks, plow trucks, and refuse‑collection vehicles.
• Prepare and transport materials, set up work sites, and maintain equipment cleanliness and secure storage.
• Work outdoors in all weather conditions, adhering to safety protocols and personal‑protective‑equipment requirements.
• Participate in 24/7 operations, on‑call shifts, and overtime as needed.

Required profile

• Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
• Class DZ driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
• Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, and perform repetitive manual tasks.
• Team‑oriented attitude and professional interaction with the public.
