Labourer 3 – Mechanical Maintenance & Facilities

About the role

This position performs skilled tasks for the operation and maintenance of roads, utilities, landscapes, building services, and waste management on the UBC Vancouver campus. It also supports specialised moving and event services.

Key responsibilities

• Perform manual physical tasks related to asset management, including road and utility preventative maintenance, landscaping, and waste collection.
• Operate light, medium and heavy vehicles and specialised equipment such as jack hammers, bobcats, backhoes, ATVs, snow‑clearing gear, hi‑lifts and power washers.
• Conduct regulatory asset inspections, condition assessments and reporting using asset‑management hardware and software.
• Support moving and event services by assembling/disassembling furniture and equipment for campus events.
• Assist with building maintenance projects, including demolition, scaffolding, rigging, asbestos removal and contractor access.

Required profile

• Secondary school education (high school) and a valid BC driver’s licence.
• Physical fitness to lift 50 lb and work in severe weather, confined spaces and at heights.

• Ability to obtain and maintain certifications such as confined‑space entry, lockout/tagout, fall protection, traffic control and asbestos handling.

Required skills

• Operation of heavy equipment (bobcat, backhoe, ATV, hi‑lift, snow‑clearing machines).
• Use of construction tools (jack hammer, power washer, scaffolding, mowers, lawn trimmers).
• Driving and operating light, medium and heavy vehicles.
• Asset‑management software and hardware for inspections and data entry.
• Certificates for confined‑space entry, lockout/tagout, fall protection, traffic control and asbestos abatement.
