Lab and Field Technician – Earth & Environmental Sciences

About the role

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UBC Okanagan seeks a Lab and Field Technician to support teaching laboratories and undergraduate experiential learning. The role provides technical and operational assistance for a variety of courses, field trips, and laboratory activities.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare reagents, chemicals, samples, and instruments for undergraduate teaching labs.
• Set up and take down laboratory equipment and coordinate shared‑resource schedules with instructors and teaching assistants.
• Maintain lab rooms, storage areas, and teaching equipment; troubleshoot failures and arrange repairs.
• Catalogue equipment, manage inventory, and handle purchasing of new or replacement items.
• Support field excursions by preparing, transporting, and maintaining field equipment and materials.
• Ensure compliance with UBC, WorkSafeBC, and safety regulations; promote safe work practices.
• Provide technical guidance to faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students.

Required profile

• Ability to work under general supervision of the Department and Lab Program Manager.
• Strong organizational skills for scheduling and inventory management.
• Effective communication with students, faculty, staff, and external suppliers.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe laboratory and field environment.
