Kitchen Lead/Cook

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and the Kenora Emergency Shelter Team Lead, the Kitchen Lead is responsible for planning and preparing nutritious meals for shelter residents. The position works seven‑and‑a‑half hour shifts as part of a team focused on safety, stability and support for individuals experiencing a housing crisis.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, prepare and serve tasty, cost‑effective meals for large groups while adhering to nutrition standards.
• Maintain health and safety standards, including food safety, WHMIS, infection control and fire safety.
• Manage food inventory, create grocery lists, purchase supplies and ensure proper storage.
• Communicate food allergies and dietary restrictions to staff and patrons.
• Perform general housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping, emptying garbage and sanitising the kitchen area.
• Attend monthly staff meetings, training sessions and participate in committees as assigned.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED minimum; culinary diploma is an asset.
• Experience working with individuals facing mental health challenges, addictions or other vulnerabilities.
• Demonstrated empathy, patience, cultural competence and ability to maintain healthy boundaries.
• Strong interpersonal communication and conflict‑management skills.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to obtain First Aid, CPR/AED, Mental Health First Aid and NVCI certifications if not already held.

Required skills

• First aid & CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Mental health first aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• NVCI certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Proficient computer skills, including online scheduling tools.
