Junior Quantum Engineer

About the role

Q-Block Computing is seeking a Junior Quantum Engineer to join its R&D team in Ottawa. The role focuses on designing, integrating, characterising and validating quantum hardware across multiple platform programmes. You will work hands‑on with optics, electronics, control systems and mechanical assemblies to deliver reliable, real‑world quantum systems.

Key responsibilities

• Support design, assembly, testing and characterisation of optical, photonic, electronic and mechanical quantum subsystems.
• Execute integration and verification procedures, troubleshoot systematically and document results for reproducible engineering decisions.
• Develop test fixtures, calibration routines and diagnostic tools to improve hardware development throughput.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and scientists to translate subsystem requirements into validated hardware designs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Master’s a plus).
• Hands‑on laboratory or engineering experience with optical, electronic or precision mechanical systems.
• Ability to read and contribute to circuit schematics, optical layouts or mechanical drawings at subsystem level.
• Strong attention to detail, methodical experimental approach and clear written and verbal communication.

Required skills

• Python and MATLAB for data analysis and scientific computing.
• Proficiency with circuit schematics, optical layouts and mechanical drawings.
• Experience with embedded systems, FPGA‑based control and hardware‑software integration.
• Familiarity with optical systems, laser hardware, fiber optics, photonic components and vacuum systems.
