Junior Data Developer

About the role

The BC Primary Health Care Research Network (BC‑PHCRN) at the University of British Columbia is seeking a Junior Data Developer to support the handling of de‑identified electronic medical record (EMR) data. Working under the direction of Dr. Sabrina Wong and Dr. Rubee Dev, you will contribute to data‑driven research that informs primary health‑care practice across British Columbia.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain software components that extract, transform, and load (ETL) EMR data for research use.
• Modify data extraction logic and transformation workflows to ensure data integrity, standardisation, and de‑identification.
• Support the backend repository architecture, including database schema updates and performance optimisation.
• Manage semi‑annual EMR data extraction operations for the network.
• Collaborate with provincial health‑care practitioners, health authorities, and internal research teams.

Required profile

• Recent graduate or early‑career professional with a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Health Informatics or a related field.
• Strong analytical mindset and ability to work with large, de‑identified health data sets.
• Effective communication skills to interact with multidisciplinary research and health‑care partners.

Required skills

• Programming experience (e.g., Python, Java, C#) for data processing.
• Familiarity with database technologies (SQL, NoSQL) and data‑pipeline concepts.
• Understanding of data de‑identification and health‑information privacy standards.
