Intern Researcher – AI Foundation Model Training

About the role

The Computing Data Application Acceleration Lab at Huawei Canada is looking for an Intern Researcher to support AI foundation model training. You will work on cutting‑edge large language, code, and multimodal models, helping to improve architecture and efficiency. This role offers exposure to both software and hardware aspects of AI systems.

Key responsibilities

• Support development and optimization of foundation models, including architecture improvements and post‑training techniques.
• Assist in building and optimizing distributed training and inference pipelines using model, tensor, and data parallelism.
• Collaborate with hardware architects and algorithm engineers to prototype and benchmark system and model performance.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing a PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Exposure to AI architectures (e.g., transformers, mixture‑of‑experts) or computer architecture (memory systems, interconnects).
• Demonstrated research interest through academic projects, internships, or publications.
• Preferred experience with GPUs or AI accelerators and contributions to open‑source ML projects.

Required skills

• Proficiency with deep‑learning frameworks such as PyTorch, vLLM, or SGLang.
• Understanding of distributed training concepts including data, model, and tensor parallelism.
• Hands‑on experience with GPUs, NPUs, or TPUs.

• Target annual compensation ranging from $58,000 to $104,000 (based on 2,080 hours per year).
