Intermediate Unix System Administrator – 1-Year Contract

About the role

We are looking for an intermediate‑level Unix System Administrator to join our Infrastructure Operations team on a one‑year contract. Based in Montreal, you will work in a hybrid model, spending three days a week on‑site supporting enterprise‑scale Linux and Unix environments.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose and resolve production‑impacting incidents across compute, storage, and infrastructure platforms.
• Collaborate with networking, database, storage and application support teams to identify root causes and restore services.
• Perform proactive health checks, system maintenance and compliance activities.
• Support and maintain Linux/Unix servers and associated infrastructure services.
• Participate in testing, validation and certification of new hardware, software and infrastructure solutions.
• Assist with onboarding of new server infrastructure and large‑scale technology initiatives.
• Monitor system performance, identify optimisation opportunities and automate routine tasks.
• Take part in an on‑call rotation and act as an escalation point for critical incidents.
• Document procedures, troubleshooting guides and operational best practices.

Required profile

• 2–5 years of experience in Linux/Unix system administration or infrastructure operations.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work in a fast‑paced, globally distributed environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, able to explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Willingness to participate in an on‑call rotation schedule.

Required skills

• Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or other enterprise Linux distributions.
• Core services: DNS, DHCP, NTP, Kerberos, SSH, PXE, SFTP, Apache/HTTP, Docker.
• Scripting: Bash, Korn Shell (KSH), Python, Perl.
• Configuration management: Red Hat Satellite, Puppet, Chef, Quattor.
• Virtualization, clustering, NAS, NFS, SAN storage.
• Enterprise server hardware (blade, rack‑mounted, standalone).
