Intermediate Geochemist / Hydrogeochemist (Canada)

About the role

BGC Engineering is looking for an intermediate Geochemist or Hydrogeochemist to work on metal leaching, acid rock drainage, water quality and seepage mitigation projects across Canada. The role involves field work, data analysis and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams on mining, pipeline and linear infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to projects that may include characterization of metal leaching/acid rock drainage, water quality, site investigations, source term development and predictive water quality modelling.
• Complete fieldwork including drilling, geological and geochemical logging, well and instrumentation installations, and surface‑ and groundwater quality and flow monitoring.
• Lead or assist with project‑specific tasks such as dataset review, development of figures and maps, and report writing.
• Supervise, train, and mentor junior staff in the field and office.
• Promote BGC’s vision, values and culture amongst the team.

Required profile

• An undergraduate or graduate degree in geochemistry, geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering or a related discipline with a strong foundation in low‑temperature geochemistry, metal leaching/ARD and/or water quality.
• 5+ years of relevant experience, including internships or co‑op terms.
• Registered Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Geoscientist‑in‑Training (GIT) with EGBC or a comparable association.
• Willingness to undertake fieldwork, often in remote locations.
• Self‑starter with a desire to contribute to technical excellence in a “One Team” environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Required skills

• Experience using water‑quality and geochemical data to develop monitoring plans or models.
• Proficiency with large datasets using EQWIN, EQuIS or Microsoft Access.
• Familiarity with modelling platforms such as PHREEQC, Geochemists Workbench, HYDRUS, MIN3P, MODFLOW and GoldSim.
• Programming/scripting skills (Python, VBA, C++, Fortran) are an asset.
• Mentoring or teaching experience with junior team members.
• French or Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
