Institutional Nurse

About the role

The Institutional Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to clients housed in Nunavut custodial facilities. Working within a secure correctional environment, the role delivers culturally responsive, ethical, and evidence‑based health services in line with Nunavut nursing standards and the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care, including intake assessments, triage, treatment planning, documentation, and evaluation.
• Conduct health and risk screenings, including suicide and self‑harm risk assessments.
• Deliver health promotion, wellness, and education programs to support client health and wellbeing.
• Coordinate medical, dental, mental health, and specialist care with internal and external service providers.
• Support chronic disease management, communicable disease surveillance, immunizations, and public health initiatives.
• Maintain accurate, confidential health records in accordance with professional and legal standards.
• Collaborate with correctional, health, and community partners to ensure continuity of care during transfers.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse designation, registered with the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN).
• At least two years of nursing experience in an acute care or institutional setting, with advanced assessment skills.
• Current Immunization Certification or ability to obtain it within six months of employment.
• Clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check (Highly Sensitive Position).
• Residency in Iqaluit is required; experience in a Nunavut community is an asset.

• Full‑time permanent position on a 42‑hour pay grid (12‑hour shifts, 4 days on/4 days off).
• Recruitment bonuses: $3,000 at start, $3,000 after 6 months, $5,000 after 1 year, $7,000 after 2 years.
