Indigenous Student Advisor

About the role

The Indigenous Student Advisor provides dedicated advising services to support the academic success, personal development, and retention of undergraduate students at the UBC Okanagan campus, with a particular focus on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, evaluate, and continuously improve student advising services, programs, and projects.
• Create and disseminate print and electronic information related to Indigenous programs.
• Assist in the development and use of information technology for student advising and Indigenous services.
• Design and implement recruiting and retention initiatives that support student success.
• Participate in office administration and collaborate with faculty, departmental advisors, peer advisors, work‑study students, and other campus service personnel.
• Conduct research, prepare briefs, data, and reports on Indigenous programs and the application of information technologies.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of student advising standards and best practices.

Required profile

• Post‑secondary education or equivalent experience in student advising or Indigenous programming.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative and considerable autonomy.
• Strong communication and consultation skills for regular interaction with faculty, advisors, and student service staff.
• Understanding of Indigenous cultures, issues, and the unique needs of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students.
• Experience developing policies, programs, and data‑driven recommendations.
