Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice

About the role

Elk Valley Resources (EVR), a steelmaking coal producer operating four mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia, is hiring Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprentices. Apprentices report to the Maintenance Supervisor and work alongside Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanics in maintaining the fleet of mining equipment, either in the shop or in the field. The schedule is 4x4 shifts, day and night.

Key responsibilities

• Follow health and safety programs and policies.
• Carry out routine preventative maintenance and repair major breakdowns, including troubleshooting and diagnostics.
• Disassemble and reassemble engines, transmissions, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems, brakes, clutches, differentials, hydraulics, electrical and lubrication systems.
• Diagnose, maintain and repair mobile off-road mining equipment such as haul trucks, graders, bulldozers, excavators, shovels and loaders.
• Work with equipment brands including CAT, Komatsu, P&H and Hitachi.

Required profile

• Registered 2nd, 3rd or 4th year Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Ability to commute to or relocate near Sparwood, BC; temporary housing support is offered through company rental units, the Elk Valley Lodge and a community rental list.
• Willingness to meet a pre-employment drug screen and provide three professional references.

Preferred experience

• Experience with off-road heavy equipment.
• Background in mining, construction, agriculture, forestry, oil and gas or other heavy industry.
• Diesel engine experience is considered for those moving into off-road work.

• Salary range of $116,000 - $126,000 CAD per year, including hourly wage, shift premiums and applicable allowances.
