Groundsperson – Athletics & Recreation

About the role

The Groundsperson supports the Athletics and Recreation department by maintaining indoor and outdoor sport facilities, ensuring they are safe, clean, and ready for use. Working under the Manager Wellness Programs and Facilities Operations, the role combines routine groundskeeping with basic repairs and public service.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain the McConnell Arena ice rink, including ice surface installation and removal.
• Repair rink boards, glass, hockey nets, and perform minor equipment repairs.
• Assemble, set up, take apart, store, and organize equipment for sports events.
• Carry out minor painting and carpentry tasks such as refreshing benches, railings, stairs, and nets.
• Perform housekeeping duties in Molson Stadium and the arena, including floor cleaning, washroom stocking, and corridor upkeep.
• Clear snow from entrances, parking lots, and garages using a pick‑up truck, snow blower, or shovel.
• Execute lawn‑care duties: mowing, planting, mulching, pruning, fertilising, watering, and basic turf maintenance.
• Secure buildings and gates, assist with evacuations, and provide directions to clients and emergency services.
• Monitor facility operations, respond to equipment malfunctions, and report serious issues to the supervisor.
• Receive deliveries, store supplies, and coordinate with internal or external service providers for repairs.

Required profile

• Physical stamina to perform manual labour outdoors and indoors.
• Ability to work independently and follow safety regulations.
• Comfort interacting with the public and providing clear information.
• Reliability in maintaining schedules for cleaning, snow removal, and grounds care.

Required skills

• Operating snow‑removal equipment (snow blower, pick‑up truck).
• Ice‑rink surface installation and removal.
• Basic carpentry and painting for benches, railings, and nets.
• Grounds‑maintenance equipment operation (mowers, trimmers, sprayers).
• Minor equipment repair and troubleshooting.
