Greenhouse Research Assistant/Technician 3

About the role

The Greenhouse Research Assistant/Technician 3 provides technical support to UBC Plant Care Services’ research greenhouses and field station. The role involves consulting with users, maintaining equipment, performing horticultural tasks, and handling administrative duties such as ordering supplies and invoicing.

Key responsibilities

• Schedule and assign greenhouse space to maximize resource utilization.
• Support greenhouse and field users, assist with project progress, and demonstrate greenhouse techniques.
• Prepare nutrient recipes, coordinate water testing, manage pesticide applications, and ensure availability of biological controls.
• Maintain safe operation of greenhouse and field equipment, perform routine maintenance, and report hazards.
• Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for greenhouse activities.
• Order equipment and supplies, prepare invoices, and provide tours or orientations for new users and student groups.

Required profile

• Completion of a relevant technical program or university degree with at least three years of related experience.
• Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and ability to work respectfully with diverse perspectives.
• Physical ability to lift up to 70 lb, stand for long periods, operate a tractor, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Required skills

• Greenhouse equipment maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting.
• Formulating nutrient recipes and conducting water quality tests.
• Pesticide application and knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.
• Inventory management, ordering supplies, and invoicing.
• Proficiency with spreadsheets, database software, and the Microsoft Office suite.
