Facility Supervisor for National Gallery of Canada

About the role

Black & McDonald is seeking an experienced Facility Supervisor to lead operations at the National Gallery of Canada. This hands‑on leader will manage technical systems, staff, and client relationships to ensure the preservation of valuable artwork in a complex, mission‑critical environment.

Key responsibilities

• Address technical and operating issues efficiently and recommend cost‑saving or service enhancements.
• Supervise staff and subcontractors, ensuring all are qualified and certified.
• Prepare reports, lead client meetings, and manage employee schedules and daily assignments.
• Provide hands‑on technical leadership for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, building automation (BAS/DDC), lighting control, and emergency power systems.
• Review alarms, trends, and system performance, making operational adjustments as needed.
• Promote and enforce health, safety, and environmental programs through inspections and safety meetings.

Required profile

• Post‑secondary diploma or trade certification in a building systems field.
• Minimum 10 years of building operations and maintenance experience in commercial, institutional or special‑purpose facilities.
• At least 5 years of progressive leadership supervising multidisciplinary maintenance teams.
• Strong problem‑solving, interpersonal and client‑relationship skills.
• Commitment to health, safety and continuous improvement.

Required skills

• HVAC equipment and systems.
• Electrical and plumbing systems.
• Building automation and Direct Digital Controls (DDC), preferably VCI Controls/Bacnet.
• Mechanical equipment troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis.
• Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (ASHRAE, NBC, NEC, CLC, NFC, OSHA, WHMIS).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
