Executive Director – Conservation & Bird Research

About the role

The Executive Director will lead Pelee Island Bird Observatory, a Canadian registered non‑profit devoted to migratory bird research and habitat conservation. This senior position guides the organization through a period of strategic growth, including the launch of a new Bird Centre and the expansion of public education and long‑term science programs.

Key responsibilities

• Implement Board‑approved strategic priorities, such as the new Bird Centre and long‑term science plan.
• Translate multi‑year strategy into annual workplans, performance objectives, and budgets.
• Align mission, strategy, operations, and resources across research, education, and community engagement.
• Assess organizational capacity regularly and adjust project timing, scope, or budgeting as needed.
• Lead fundraising initiatives, donor cultivation, and partnership development.
• Manage and grow a committed volunteer base and oversee day‑to‑day operations.
• Represent the Observatory to stakeholders, funders, and the broader conservation community.

Required profile

• Hands‑on leader with a builder mindset, comfortable with ambiguity and challenge.
• Proven experience in nonprofit or conservation leadership, strategic planning, and fundraising.
• Ability to inspire and engage diverse donor, stakeholder, and community groups.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
