Engineer - Optical Systems

About the role

Huawei Canada's Advanced Optical Technology Lab is seeking an Engineer to develop high‑speed optoelectronic models and fiber‑channel simulations for cutting‑edge optical communication systems. The role involves both theoretical modeling and hands‑on experimental validation in a collaborative, multicultural environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop models for optoelectronic components such as modulators, lasers, drivers, TIAs, and photodetectors.
• Create fiber‑channel models for single‑mode, multi‑mode, and hollow‑core fibers, addressing dispersion and interference effects.
• Investigate device impairments (driver non‑linearity, laser noise, clock jitter, TIA thermal noise) through simulation and experimental characterization.
• Set up offline/online test beds to evaluate pre‑ and post‑FEC performance for direct‑ and coherent‑detection systems.
• Collaborate with DSP, ASIC, and modem control teams to identify impairment sources and propose performance‑enhancing solutions.

Required profile

• Ph.D. or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field.
• Experience in simulation and modeling of optoelectronic components and optical fiber communications.
• Strong hands‑on experimental background in optical system testing and performance characterization.
• Industrial experience in optical communication systems and knowledge of DSP or machine learning is a plus.

Required skills

• Programming in Python, C/C++, and Julia.

• Digital signal processing (DSP) concepts.
