Crown Prosecutor – Appeals Unit (Temporary)

About the role

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service is seeking a temporary Crown Prosecutor to join its Appeals Unit in Edmonton. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on complex criminal appeals at the provincial and national levels, influencing the development of criminal law.

Key responsibilities

• Advance and respond to acquittal, conviction, and sentence appeals before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
• Prepare recommendations and legal arguments for Crown appeals.
• Provide legal advice to ACPS staff, senior management, and other government departments.
• Contribute to Crown education programs and professional development initiatives.
• Advise enforcement agencies and other branches of ACPS on criminal law matters.
• Handle serious and complex appellate matters with a comprehensive knowledge of substantive and procedural law.

Required profile

• A licensed lawyer with strong interest and experience in appellate advocacy.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex criminal appeals.
• Comprehensive knowledge of substantive and procedural criminal law.
• Excellent analytical, research, and written advocacy skills.
• Ability to provide clear legal advice to senior officials and external partners.
