Course Technician

About the role

The Course Technician supports the Lab Course Coordinator and technical staff in delivering two large undergraduate biology laboratory courses at McGill University. The position ensures that daily teaching labs run smoothly by preparing materials, managing inventories, and maintaining a safe laboratory environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and organize solutions, reagents, samples, and live organisms required for each lab session.
• Inspect prep rooms and teaching labs daily to identify and resolve safety or equipment issues.
• Maintain electronic inventories for chemicals, consumables, glassware, and equipment.
• Process purchase requisitions, follow up on orders, and verify the quality of received items.
• Perform routine maintenance and coordinate repairs of laboratory equipment and spaces.
• Document procedures, updates, and photographs on shared electronic platforms.
• Suggest and implement improvements to lab preparation workflows.

Required profile

Required skills

• Solution preparation and aliquoting
• Handling of hazardous substances and live organisms (bacteria, fungi, algae, seeds, invertebrates, etc.)
• Laboratory inventory management (chemicals, consumables, glassware, plasticware)
• Use of MSDS and lab safety protocols
• Basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
