Course Lecturer – Intermediate Indigenous Language (Cree)

About the role

McGill University’s Office of First Nation and Inuit Education is seeking two qualified instructors to teach an intermediate Cree language course (EDEC 342) during the Fall 2026 term. The short‑term contract runs from September 14 to October 23, with classroom sessions from September 29 to October 7 in the communities of Chisasibi and Waswanipi.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver the EDEC 342 curriculum covering Indigenous language phonology, structure, and dialectical variations.
• Adapt teaching materials to the cultural and social context of each community.
• Coordinate with OFNIE staff and the partnering school board before the course start date.
• Assess student performance and provide feedback.
• Travel to the teaching sites; expenses, accommodation and per diems are reimbursed.

Required profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent research/professional experience) related to Indigenous languages.
• Expert knowledge of Cree language phonology and structure.
• Familiarity with the Quebec Education Program and the 13 professional competencies required by the Ministère de l’Éducation.
• Understanding of the impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities and experience applying equity‑focused pedagogy.
• Teaching or consulting experience in Quebec elementary schools or Indigenous communities.
• Experience developing curriculum grounded in Indigenous knowledge.
