About the role

The Controller will lead the financial operations of a mission‑driven non‑profit organization in Kitchener‑Waterloo. This senior position requires strong leadership, sound judgment, and a focus on accuracy, compliance, and stewardship of resources.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic financial leadership and partner with senior leadership to inform decision‑making.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a small finance team, ensuring accuracy and accountability.
• Prepare timely financial statements in accordance with non‑profit accounting standards and oversee reporting to government agencies and funders.
• Coordinate external audits and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Drive the annual budgeting process, monitor performance, and produce forecasts, variance analyses, and dashboards.
• Oversee month‑end and year‑end close, cash flow, banking, payroll oversight, and general ledger integrity.
• Evaluate and improve financial processes, and support the adoption of financial systems and reporting tools.

Required profile

• CPA designation strongly preferred; CA firm experience is a plus.
• Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in accounting, with cost accounting knowledge.
• Proven expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and month‑end close.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Comfortable working autonomously in a hybrid environment.
