Communications Officer – Flight Planning & Coordination

About the role

The Communications Officer – Flight Planning/Following supports Ornge’s Operations Control Centre by planning and monitoring air and land patient transports, including neonatal and organ retrieval missions. The role ensures the appropriate resources are allocated and maintains clear communication with pilots, paramedics, physicians and other health professionals to guarantee safe, timely transfers.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and coordinate air and associated land patient transportation across Ontario.
• Select suitable aircraft or ground resources based on patient needs and geographic location.
• Maintain real‑time communication with pilots, paramedics, doctors and allied health staff during each transport.
• Respond quickly to emergency calls and adjust plans as situations evolve.
• Analyze operational issues, develop solutions and execute contingency plans.

Required profile

• Recognized education in aviation management/operations or an emergency telecommunication certificate (preferred).
• Valid Standard First‑Aid/CPR and AED Level C certificate (minimum 24 months).
• Restricted Operator Certificate – Aeronautical (ROC‑A).
• At least 2 years of aviation or dispatch experience in a systems operations control centre, land EMS or air traffic control.

Required skills

• Standard First‑Aid/CPR and AED Level C certification.

• Experience in aviation dispatch and flight planning.
• Knowledge of air or land ambulance transfer systems.
• Understanding of airport operations and aircraft capabilities.
