Civil/Structural Engineering Co-Op Internship

About the role

EMS-Tech Inc., an engineering firm designing and supplying bulk material handling equipment, is looking for a Civil Engineering Co-op Intern. The role is onsite in the office in Belleville, Ontario, Monday to Friday at 40 hours per week, starting in May 2027. It suits students passionate about structural challenges and CAD drafting, with the possibility of visiting global project sites.

Key responsibilities

• Complete analysis and calculations for conceptual designs prepared by others, within given task scope, schedule and budgeted hours.
• Develop 2D and 3D CAD drafting skills and produce drawings to company standards.
• Learn equipment, systems and design methods, including steel codes (AISC, CSA S16), welding codes (AWS D1.1, CSA W59) and industry standards (FEM Section II, CEMA).
• Use structural modelling software and finite element analysis, verifying results with hand calculations and equilibrium checks.
• Size and select mechanical components such as shafts, bearings, gearboxes, reducers, couplings and hydraulic systems.
• Check members and connections, use spreadsheets such as Excel, and learn basic welding principles.
• Prepare and check general arrangement and detailed drawings, and perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Required profile

• Rising 3rd or 4th-year Civil Engineering student.
• Willing to commit 12 to 14 months to the internship, extendable to 14 months total.
• Strong interpersonal communication, able to work collaboratively and independently and communicate across business units and management levels.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
• 2D and 3D CAD drafting.
