City Dispatcher

About the role

Manitoulin Transport, which has provided transportation and logistics solutions across North America for 60 years, is hiring a City Dispatcher for its Whitehorse service area, including surrounding rural routes. The role is fast-paced and demanding, acting as the nerve center of operations by planning and coordinating pickups and deliveries so that customer expectations are met or exceeded.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and coordinate all terminal pickups and deliveries, including LTL load planning and city and rural route planning.
• Supervise City Drivers, giving direction and delegating tasks.
• Answer the phone and handle driver requests such as hook-up information and delay updates, and communicate with internal staff and external customers.
• Work within the AS/400 platform to schedule, track shipments and carry out other system tasks.
• Print labels, add comments justifying non-service deliveries and follow company policies and safety guidelines.
• Lead by example, promote a safety-minded culture and help book and reschedule appointments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Solid geographical knowledge of Whitehorse and surrounding rural areas.
• Previous dispatch experience in an LTL environment.
• Experience with LTL load planning and city/rural route planning.
• Excellent phone and email communication, polite and professional with customers, drivers and management.
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and handle shift work.
• Demonstrated team leader abilities and delegation skills.
• Safety-minded and knowledgeable of TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods).

Required skills

• Fluent computer skills, able to use handheld devices.
• Ability to understand and operate an AS/400 system; AS/400 experience is a strong asset and training is offered.
