Category Manager – Strategic Procurement

About the role

The Category Manager will lead the development and execution of category strategies within the university’s strategic procurement function. Reporting to the Associate Director – Procurement Strategy, this role works closely with financial operations and internal stakeholders to drive value, cost reductions, and compliance across high‑risk, high‑value spend categories.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and continuously improve the framework for strategic sourcing and category management.
• Lead strategic sourcing initiatives for high‑risk and high‑value categories, including supplier selection and contract negotiation.
• Manage supplier relationships and provide guidance to faculty and staff on complex procurement needs.
• Ensure all procurement activities comply with university policies and municipal, provincial, and federal regulations.
• Identify and leverage technology solutions and process improvement opportunities to enhance category management practices.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of procurement policies, strategic sourcing, and category management principles.
• Experience negotiating contracts and managing supplier relationships.
• Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders and provide expert advice on procurement matters.
• Understanding of relevant municipal, provincial and federal laws and university code of ethics.
