Building Operator – Facility Maintenance Specialist

About the role

The Building Operator ensures reliable operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, life‑safety and environmental systems across our facilities. You will provide technical guidance to the Facilities Management team and oversee contractor work to keep building services running safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and support a comprehensive preventive‑maintenance program.
• Operate, inspect and perform minor repairs on boilers, HVAC, chillers and auxiliary equipment.
• Execute corrective, demand and preventive maintenance tasks and troubleshoot system failures.
• Coordinate with control‑systems contractors for building automation.
• Respond to staff concerns, provide technical expertise and oversee contracted services.
• Maintain documentation, inventories, licences and safety records.
• Participate in energy‑management initiatives and recommend efficiency measures.

Required profile

• Post‑secondary education as a Class I Building Environmental Systems Operator, Building Operator, Power Engineer or equivalent.
• Valid G1 Gas Technician Licence or 4th Class Power Engineer Licence.
• At least 5 years continuous experience operating and maintaining building environmental systems.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a satisfactory driving record.
• Knowledge of ASHRAE standards, gas and propane codes, boiler safety, TSSA regulations and relevant provincial/municipal codes.

Required skills

• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
• Hands‑on experience with HVAC and building‑automation control systems.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, basic Excel and work‑order/financial software.
• Understanding of building, fire, electrical and occupational health & safety codes.
