Auxiliary Animal Care Technician

About the role

The Auxiliary Animal Care Technician provides essential daily care and maintenance for laboratory animals at UBC’s Okanagan Biosciences Facility. Working part‑time (0.2‑0.4 FTE) on‑site, you will support research teams by ensuring animal welfare and a clean, functional environment.

Key responsibilities

• Perform cage changing, provide food and water, and supply enrichment for various laboratory species.
• Conduct health checks, record observations, and report any signs of ill‑health.
• Administer medications according to written instructions (e.g., eye drops, topical antibacterials).
• Operate cage dumping stations, cage washers, bottle fillers and pass‑through sterilizers.
• Maintain cleanliness of the facility, including sweeping, mopping, and cleaning vents and cage racks.
• Perform routine equipment maintenance and manage inventory and record‑keeping.
• Identify and recommend adjustments to environmental conditions to sustain operational proficiency.

Required profile

• Collaborative team player who reports to the Team Lead and the Facility Manager.
• Ability to interact with research faculty, staff, students, and external suppliers.
• Attention to detail and commitment to animal welfare and safety standards.

Required skills

• Basic animal husbandry and handling techniques.
• Health monitoring and documentation of laboratory animals.
• Operation of cage washing and sterilization equipment.
• Medication preparation and administration following protocols.
• Facility cleaning and routine equipment maintenance.
