Associate Legal Counsel – Commercial Insurance

About the role

AXA XL is seeking an Associate Legal Counsel to provide legal and regulatory guidance to its commercial lines underwriting teams in Canada. The role involves advising on a broad range of insurance and reinsurance matters while supporting business operations across Toronto and Montreal.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as legal and regulatory counsel to underwriting business units, delivering timely advice on insurance, reinsurance and corporate issues.
• Draft, review and negotiate a wide variety of commercial contracts, including producer, program administrator, confidentiality, vendor and indemnity agreements.
• Review marketing materials and provide legal input on complex insurance structures and policy terms.
• Collaborate with internal functions such as Operations, Marketing and Claims to ensure legal compliance.
• Retain and manage outside counsel for non‑claims litigation and oversee regulatory reporting requirements.
• Research and analyze insurance‑related legal and compliance issues.

Required profile

• Law degree from an accredited Canadian law school and admission to the bar in at least one Canadian province.
• Intermediate‑level experience in‑house or at a law firm within a Canadian commercial property and casualty insurer.
• Strong knowledge of Canadian insurance laws, regulations and interaction with insurance regulators.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor, set expectations and hold self and others accountable.
• Strategic thinker capable of leading large‑scale, complex legal and regulatory matters.

Required skills

• Legal drafting and contract negotiation.
• Excellent verbal and written communication in English; French is an asset.
