Assistant Professor – Chemistry of Wildfires (Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader)

About the role

The Department of Chemistry at UBC Okanagan invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position focused on the chemistry of wildfire emissions and by‑products. The role supports the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program and will join the Centre for Wildfire Coexistence.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and lead an innovative research program on smoke aerosol chemistry, fire‑suppression product design, and contaminant fate.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise students, and contribute to curriculum development.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary research clusters and participate in departmental service and outreach activities.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related discipline and post‑doctoral experience.
• Early‑career researcher within five years of first independent appointment, with a strong record of research productivity and external funding potential.
• Demonstrated excellence in communication, teaching, and mentorship.

Required skills

• Analytical chemistry techniques for heavy‑metal and contaminant analysis.
• Synthetic chemistry for environmentally sustainable fire‑suppression materials.
• Expertise in environmental chemistry and smoke aerosol research.

What we offer

• Competitive salary range of $115,000–$125,000 CAD per year.
• Annual research award of $20,000 for up to six years (total $100,000).
• Tenure‑track appointment with full institutional support and access to interdisciplinary research facilities.
