Animal Care Technician – Research Support

About the role

The Animal Care Technician (ACT) provides high‑level animal care and facility support to the animal‑based research community at the University of British Columbia. Working closely with clinical veterinarians and animal care teams, the ACT ensures safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the Centre for Comparative Medicine.

Key responsibilities

• Perform basic animal husbandry, cage processing, laundry, and general facility maintenance.
• Maintain daily care for small and large laboratory animal species.
• Handle animals exposed to hazardous, bio‑hazardous, and radioactive agents following strict safety protocols.
• Collaborate with Registered Veterinary Technologists, veterinarians, and supervisors.
• Provide on‑call support after an initial 6‑8 week full‑time training period.

Required profile

• Ability to work at least one shift per week on an on‑call basis.
• Commitment to safety, PPE use, and adherence to bio‑hazard and radiological guidelines.
• Flexibility to respond to operational needs and seniority‑based scheduling.

Required skills
