Animal Attendant

About the role

The Animal Attendant provides essential care and maintenance for a variety of research animals in a university animal facility. This role ensures that animals receive proper nutrition, water, enrichment, and a safe environment that complies with Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) standards.

Key responsibilities

• Feed animals according to established schedules and ensure access to potable water.
• Inspect and maintain animal housing, clean cages, pens, and ancillary items, and provide species‑specific enrichment.
• Verify macro‑environment conditions (visual, auditory, olfactory) and ensure equipment functionality.
• Monitor animal health, report abnormalities, and apply treatments as directed by veterinary staff.
• Receive and ship animals, verify paperwork, sex, number, and health status, and prepare transport containers.
• Sanitize all animal‑related areas, including procedure rooms, euthanasia rooms, and common spaces.
• Complete required logs and reports in accordance with CCAC guidelines.

Required profile

• Ability to work with a range of animal species and follow strict animal‑care protocols.
• Attention to detail for record‑keeping and compliance with CCAC standards.
• Good communication skills to report health issues and coordinate with veterinary and technical staff.
• Physical ability to handle cleaning, cage changes, and animal transport tasks.
