AI Researcher – Agents & Multimodal Systems

About the role

Huawei Canada's Noah's Ark Laboratory is seeking a researcher to advance AI agents, large language models, vision‑language models and multimodal AI. The 12‑month contract focuses on novel, high‑impact research that can be translated into product‑ready technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research on AI agents, LLMs, VLMs, code generation and multimodal AI, targeting novel problems.
• Design and develop GUI, web, mobile and computer‑use agents and coding agents.
• Develop new approaches for supervised fine‑tuning, reinforcement learning, agent training, tool use and function calling.
• Build prototypes, datasets, training pipelines, benchmarks and evaluation frameworks.
• Run rigorous experiments, analyze results and publish in top‑tier conferences and journals.
• Collaborate with engineers to translate research ideas into practical systems.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Machine Learning or equivalent research experience.
• Strong background in one or more areas such as LLMs, VLMs, multimodal learning, reinforcement learning, generative AI, code generation or AI agents.
• Proven ability to formulate research problems, design algorithms, conduct experiments and publish in venues like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ACL, etc.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Deep learning frameworks, especially PyTorch.
• Experience with LLM/VLM fine‑tuning, RLHF/RLVR and preference optimization.
• Development of GUI, web, mobile and computer‑use agents.
• Web technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, DOM, Playwright or browser APIs.
• Distributed training on large‑scale GPU systems.
• Model distillation and efficient inference for edge models.

What we offer

• Annual total compensation ranging from $127,000 to $225,000 CAD.
