Senior Manager, Mechanical Maintenance

About the role

The Senior Manager, Mechanical Maintenance leads the equipment maintenance function at VIA Rail’s Maintenance Centre in Montreal. Reporting to the Director of Mechanical Maintenance, this role oversees Small Shops, Cars Maintenance and Car Projects, driving a proactive, planned maintenance strategy to ensure high train availability.

Key responsibilities

• Direct a team of supervisors and unionized staff, providing coaching and development plans.
• Develop and communicate mechanical and maintenance strategies aligned with VIA Rail’s short‑ and long‑term vision.
• Manage daily operations including production, material, tooling, on‑time performance, safety, budget efficiency, maintenance performance, quality and staffing.
• Track costs and ensure accurate billing of labor, manpower and materials to projects or work orders.
• Oversee investigation processes in accordance with collective agreements.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in a mechanical or equipment maintenance environment.
• Ability to lead change initiatives and promote continuous improvement.
• Strong knowledge of safety standards, union relations and budgeting.
• Excellent communication skills to convey strategies and operational changes.
